Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his Goa counterpart Manohar Parrikar are among 55 MPs who will vote in their state assemblies instead of Parliament House for the presidential election tomorrow, an Election Commission document says.
The CPI (M), which is backing Meira Kumar, urged voters, comprising MPs and MLAs, to pick the "custodian of the Constitution" thoughtfully. President Pranab Mukherjee's term is expiring on July 25. "When member come out of voting chamber special pen will be taken back by polling staff and would be handed over his/her pen if he/she was carrying", the note added. EC officials were categorical that if the ballot paper is marked by any other pen then the vote will be declared invalid. They will be given a violet ink pen that carries a unique serial number before they enter the voting hall.
The pens for the presidential polls were introduced following a controversy that broke out during voting in the Rajya Sabha polls in Haryana in September 2016.
The poll panel has also prepared special posters for dos and donts so as to "ensure peaceful poll".
A majority of the MPs and MLAs who will vote in next week's presidential polls are crorepatis, accounting for 75 per cent of the total votes, says a report.
