"The Department of National Defense has submitted to the Office of the President its recommendation on July 13 whether or not to extend Martial Law in Marawi and the whole of Mindanao".
Martial law is now in place over the entire Mindanao islands because of the violence, which has so far killed more than 500 people.
"If indeed some of our soldiers are found guilty of committing excesses under martial law, then we will not hesitate to administer the appropriate sanctions against these individuals, while ensuring that due process is followed", Mr. Lorenzana said in a press statement.
"I'll be surprised if he'll (Duterte) not ask for an extension", Gordon told dzBB.
He noted that Article VII, Section 18 of the Constitution allows the President to place any part of the country under martial law for a period not exceeding 60 days.
Drilon said he and the rest of the minority senators would support any proposed resolution to "immediately convene Congress in joint session to hear the explanations of the executive branch on the extension of martial law".
The Defense chief also affirmed that his "trust and confidence in the professionalism and integrity of the Armed Forces, however, remains strong", amid allegations.

The crisis in Marawi, now on its 56th day, has a death toll so far of 537: 399 militants, 93 government troops, and 45 civilians.
As this develops, Dela Rosa also said that they have detected plans of the New People's Army (NPA) to conduct pre-SONA attacks on Davao City as part of their efforts to embarrass the President.
"We have made it clear from the very start that all our operations under martial law will be based on the rule of law and respect for human rights of all, regardless of religion, ethnicity or ideology".
Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana had also submitted last Thursday his department's recommendation for martial law extension.
Iqbal said he feared the Marawi siege could complicate the passage of the law if there was a perception that the MILF and the radical Maute group fighting in Marawi were associated with each other because both hail from the same region. "We'll arrest them first", Philippine National Police (PNP) Director-General Ronald M. dela Rosa said.
He said the Maute group is still showing resistance with machine guns, anti-tank weapons and snipers although the AFP has recovered some 500 firearms from the main battle area.
AFP Chief-of-Staff Eduardo Año, in an interview in Camp Aguinaldo yesterday, said that while he can not disclose the contents of the AFP's recommendation, he said the AFP will support whatever decision the President makes.
