"I've worked so many weekends and so much overtime to pay for this, I wanted to make sure it would be the ideal wedding", Cummins explained, adding that she plans to stay for the dinner with her mom and her two sisters as long as she doesn't become too "emotional" to stay.
Sarah Cummins, a pharmacy student at Purdue University in IN, called off her wedding and threw a party for the homeless. She then said she felt really sick at the thought of throwing away the food she had ordered for the reception.
Instead of letting her nonrefundable reception go to waste, she contacted nearby homeless shelters and invited the residents to her party at the Ritz Charles.
"My ex-fiancé was kind enough to transfer his tickets to my mom", Cummins said.
"It's just a really great opportunity for us, that was going to be a huge tragedy in her life", Erik Jensen, a resident of Wheeler Mission - an in homeless shelter - and guest at the party, told The Indy Star.
So, after discussing it with her ex-groom, they both made a decision to use the cancellation as an opportunity to help people in need.
The menu included chicken breast with artichokes and a Chardonnay cream sauce, and roasted garlic bruschetta.

So now teams will have to consider really cutting their farm system in order to get that piece they need for a run. First, Dallas Keuchel and Collin McHugh are both on track to return to the rotation in the next few weeks.
Working with the hotel's event planner, Ms Cummings is rearranging the tables at the reception so there is no head table for the couple or gift and cake tables.
Ms Cummings also took the care to arrange transportation for her reception guests and, if she's feeling up to it, will stay through the dinner after she, her mother, and a few bridesmaids arrange her handmade centrepieces on each of the tables. For dessert, there's wedding cake, of course.
"It was really devastating", Cummins, 25, told The Indy Star.
Cummins and her mother will arrive early to help set up the event, and she said that if she can emotionally handle it, she will be there for the entire dinner.
"I will at least have some kind of happy memory to pull from", she says. Cummins says she hopes it will provide the necessary alone time she feels she needs before she returns to school at Purdue University.
"For me, it was an opportunity to let these people know they deserved to be at a place like this just as much as everyone else does", she added.
