Union minister and LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan said the Bihar chief minister should take a decision on his association with the RJD "at the earliest" as Lalu Prasad could break the JD (U) to form a government of his own. Lalu said Tejashwi has already told his critics that he would explain everything to the people in the run-up to the August 27 rally in Patna in which top leaders of all the non-NDA parties would participate.
The snub is the latest indication of a huge rift between the RJD and the JD-U, as well as a possible chink within the apparently united Opposition. Nitish Kumar, though he continued to maintain studied silence on the issue, was reportedly anguished over the RJD's attitude even as JD (U)'s unofficial four-day ultimatum to Tejaswi to resign expired Saturday. The reasons here might be Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as Nitish Kumar had openly opposed Modi when he was Gujarat Chief Minister by refusing to share stage with him after the 2002 Godhra riots.
Earlier Nitish Kumar had rammed Tejashwi to come clean to the public with "fact-wise" replies to the corruption allegations on him.

As asked by JD (U), deputy chief minister Tejashwi resigns and Lalu nominates someone else from the party as deputy CM. His eldest daughter Misa Bharti, son-in-law Shailesh Kumar and son Tejashwi Yadav as well as Prasad's wife and former Bihar chief minister Rabri Devi came under the scanner of the income-tax (I-T) department under the Benami Transactions Act 1988. There is increased pressure on chief minister Nitish Kumar to sack Tejashwi to protect an image of clean governance. This was a counter back to RJD's spokesperson who said that RJD has 80 MLAs and it will do what it wants to do and will stand with Tejashwi Yadav.
In New Delhi, JD (U) leader Sharad Yadav met Congress chief Sonia Gandhi amid the crisis in Patna. JDU spokespersons have also saying that the health of the grand alliance was taking a beating because of statements of RJD leaders who reminded the JDU that it had more MLAs in the assembly.
This assertion from the RJD chief thus brought an end to speculations that Tejashwi Yadav might step down from the post to save the ruling alliance.
