Bob Bowlsby spent much of his state of the Big 12 address Monday trumpeting why he is optimistic that the return of a conference title game may yield better representation for the league in the College Football Playoff.
Bowlsby says he feels good about what the Big 12 is doing and he defended the league against negative perceptions.
With only one berth by Oklahoma in three years of the CFP, the Big 12 will join the rest of the Power Five world with a championship game this season matching the top two teams from the round-robin regular season schedule. That game, Bowlsby and the 10 schools hope, will provide the extra boost for the conference to help push the league's best team into the playoff system.
"What you may not remember is that the Big 12 was first in scoring defense in the postseason past year, first among all conferences in scoring defense", he said Monday.
The Big 12 announced in February it would hold back a quarter of Baylor's share of conference revenue pending the outcome of an independent review of athletic procedures and university governance. As a whole, no team from the league last season beat a nonconference team that finished in the top 25.
Another scenario the Big 12 needs to confront is that its competitive balance could backfire.
The Big 12 is in the middle of its two media days this evening. Bowlsby believes that "from top to bottom we are the best in the country in terms of balance".
USA outlines roadmap for NAFTA overhaul
Monday's road map didn't specifically spell out some hotly debated objectives, such as mechanisms for reducing the trade deficit. The 17-page summary of negotiations for NAFTA offers a glimpse into what a Trump administration trade agenda could look like.
"Thirty-three of the championship games have been rematches, so the rematch is not aberrational".
The addition of the Big 12's championship game could give league members a boost of approximately $3 million per year.
Bowlsby does not expect the conference's assessment of Baylor to conclude before the 2017 football season begins, he said.
"We had heard from the CFP Selection Committee the fact that we didn't have that 13th data point - the championship game", Bowlsby said. "I think you could have a great game on the last week of the season and another great game between the same two teams the next week".
Indeed, the championship game will pit the top two teams in the conference. "I think we play at an exceedingly high level, and I think over the 12 years of the playoff, you'll see Big 12 teams in there".
"I think it's a perception, not a reality", Bowlsby said. It's not about making the playoff. "It's about winning national championships".
